Audio Description at The Courtyard

Did you know that The Courtyard offers an audio description service on selected Live Shows throughout the year? The Courtyard Audio Description Association (CADA) are a group of volunteers that provide description on performances to improve the theatre experience for visually impaired and blind people who visit The Courtyard.

What is Audio Description?

Audio Description is a live verbal commentary that describes set, props, costumes, actions and elements of a production. The description is delivered in between sections of dialogue during quieter moments of the performance.

How does it work?

A member of CADA sits in a soundproof box during the performance. In between dialogue, they describe the action on stage through a microphone. This audio is then picked up by discreet headsets worn by people using the service. Previous to this, the describer will have observed a dress rehearsal and spent time working with the production’s script to ensure that the description is as accurate as possible.

How can I book for Audio Description?

Audience members who wish to use the Audio Description service are asked to notify Box Office when booking tickets. On the day of the performance, a headset will be available to be collected before the show starts and audience members using AD will be able to go into the theatre early to listen to show notes that help to set the scene before curtain up.

How do I find out what performances are Audio Described?
