Love and loss go hand in hand in this funny, emotionally piercing story, anchored by a never-better Annette Bening. California, 1979, feminist single mum, Dorothea (Bening), decides to enlist her young tenants – a quirky punk photographer (Gerwig), a mellow handyman (Crudup) and her son’s shrewd best friend (Fanning) – to teach her teenage son, Jamie how to become a man. This is generous, reflective, and absolutely delightful, thanks to insightful writing that absolutely sings and a note-perfect ensemble of well-drawn, lived-in characters. With her radiant, tour de force performance, a simply glorious Annette Bening makes this something special.
“The movie belongs wholeheartedly to Bening, and to the age that she enshrines.”
