CHAMBER WINDS FROM THE ROYAL WELSH COLLEGE OF MUSIC & DRAMA

Dvorak            Serenade for Winds in D minor Op 44
Mozart            Serenade in B flat for 13 Wind Instruments K361 ‘Gran Partita’

This wind ensemble of senior students from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama will play two of the great works in the wind repertoire.  They will open the programme with Dvorak’s rustic and lyrical Serenade for Winds, arresting from its very opening with its dark, rich sonorities.  The work is set in a classical mould but has a distinctly Bohemian flavour.  In the second half, they will play a truly celebrated masterpiece: Mozart’s sublime Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments, otherwise known as the ‘Gran Partita’.  Here is a passage from the film ‘Amadeus’ spoken by the composer Salieri on hearing the opening bars of the second movement.

‘On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse. Bassoons and basset horns, like a rusty squeezebox. And then suddenly, high above it, an oboe: a single note, hanging there, unwavering… until a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.’
