Duration: 140 minutes

Elgar – Serenade for Strings
Mozart – Piano Concerto no25

Mozart – Symphony no31 ‘Paris’

Peter Donohoe – piano/director

A perfect successor to Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings is also the perfect complement to the earlier composer’s lucid way with orchestration. Add in some wind and timpani and you also have the perfect backing for Peter Donohoe’s immersive interpretation of this, the last of the twelve great Viennese piano concertos. But then add a pair of clarinets and an extra flute, and we have the twenty-two-year-old Mozart at his most vigorous – as is Elgar’s stirring Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra: again glancing backwards to become one of the greatest concerto grossos ever composed.
