Ray & Liz

Ray & Liz (15)

Borderlines Film Festival
Thursday 1 January 1970
Director: Richard Billingham
Starring: Ella Smith, Justin Salinger, Patrick Romer
Duration: 108 minutes

On the fringes of Birmingham and the margins of society, the Billingham family perform extreme rituals and break social taboos as they muddle through a life decided by factors beyond their control. At times shocking, and laced with an unsettling humour, three episodes unfold as a powerful evocation of the experience of growing up in a Black Country council flat that was director Richard Billingham’s own. Blisteringly honest, detached even, his first feature takes the photos of his alcoholic dad and his mountainous, tattooed mum (Ray and Liz), featured in the Saatchi ‘Sensation’ exhibition in the late ’90s, that step further.

Director Richard Billingham will introduce the screening with a Q&A to follow
