Souad (12A) – Presteigne Screen
Ayten Amin’s dynamic second feature explores the double life of a spirited young Egyptian woman. 19-year-old Souad is on the cusp of adulthood, but her desire for new freedoms clashes with the expectations of her family, religion and society with dire consequences. Conservative and veiled in public, her online personality constantly shifts as she tries out virtual romances. With a fresh non-professional cast, Souad offers a complex picture of contemporary Egypt and its younger generation that’s both affectionate and critical. It throws light on the secret spaces inhabited by young Egyptian women, and the unsustainable tensions that arise from forbidding freedoms so readily available on social media.
