The Children Act (12A)
Scripted by the book’s original author, Ian McEwan, and directed by Eyre (Notes on a Scandal, Iris) this is a taut drama that sees Emma Thompson in incredible form, treading the boards of power as High Court judge Fiona Maye, and struggling with a disintegrating marriage to Jack (Tucci) at home. Trapped in a conundrum with a case of moral uncertainty, whether to force a teenage boy to have a blood transfusion in spite of his religion, she decides to visit him in the hope a connection will bring her closer to a solution. Wrought with emotion, Thompson is, as ever, impeccable.
“This is a heartbreaking lament for loves lost and lives unrealised, a restrained, nuanced movie about nuance and restraint.”
