The Guardians (Les Gardiennes) (15)
It’s 1915 and World War I is raging on, but in this unspoiled country the women are guarding the farms, managing the land in the absence of their husbands. Tirelessly driven Hortense hires young orphan Francine, in place of her own reluctant daughter, and a friendship of respect flourishes, at the cost of the familial status quo. This is a beautiful and intriguing reflection on rural life for women.
“Like a series of Monet paintings come to life, the historical drama “The Guardians” luxuriates in lush, widescreen images of the French countryside.”
