Taking on the role of Landlady | TWO

Taking on the role of Landlady

When working on ‘two’ I have really enjoyed being able to create our own work to go in the performance, exploring a variety of techniques for devising in a physical theatre style. We worked in pairs producing physical duets. We then repeated these sequences a number of times in slightly different ways, showing the development of our relationship from before the play begins through to the end. As well finding physical theatre a fun alternative to show narrative, physicalising our journeys helped us to discover more about our characters, and how they might respond in certain situations. We built on this character work by exploring which particular body parts our character might lead from, what status they are and what their overall objectives are.

I am playing the Landlady, who is very conflicted, with almost two different personalities. There is the jokey, bubbly character which she portrays to the public, and the bitter, regretful lady who she rarely allows to escape. Although I have found balancing these two different sides of landlady challenging, it has been fun to have so many emotions and possibilities to work with. I’m looking forward to developing my characters relationship with the Landlord more and to doing more physical theatre.
