The Courtyard signs the City of Sanctuary Pledge – Refugee Week 2023
Refugee Week takes place this month from 19 – 25 June. In 2022 we were able to bring you a programme of incredible work by and for refugees. This year, The Courtyard has taken an important step by signing The City of Sanctuary pledge, reaffirming our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming space for refugees.
Understanding Refugee Week
Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. It serves as an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and promote a culture of inclusivity and empathy.
The City of Sanctuary Pledge
“We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).
We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed, included and supported within our context. We expect our branches or local groups (if any) to support their local City of Sanctuary group if one exists, and will facilitate contact between them and their local City of Sanctuary group.”
By signing this pledge, we commit to being a place of safety, support, and inclusion for refugees and asylum seekers. This pledge signifies our dedication to providing a welcoming environment and encourages others to follow suit. Arts and culture have always played a vital role in promoting social cohesion and this is no exception.
Simple Acts to Show Support
During Refugee Week, everyone has an opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive society. Take a look at the Refugee Week website to find out some things you can do this week to learn more and raise the profile of the festival.
Refugee Week provides an opportunity to reflect on our shared humanity and celebrate the resilience and contributions of refugees. We hope in signing the pledge our support for refugees highlights our commitment to creating an inclusive space.
Remember, small gestures can have a profound impact. Together, we can build a world where every person, regardless of their background, is welcomed and embraced.
