The Courtyard Development 2020 FAQ’s
As most of you will know by now, The Courtyard underwent a vast transformation last year, with work commencing in April 2020. There were a lot of questions about the project, so we’ve put together a few frequently asked questions that should hopefully answer most queries.
Why are you making these changes?
In 2018, The Courtyard turned 20. A lot has changed for us, and in order to carry on offering a cultural venue to Herefordshire and beyond, we needed to be able to grow. We wanted to ensure that our building will continue to be welcoming and accessible, as well as having offering new opportunities to our community.
What will change? Will the auditorium stay the same?
There were significant changes to the building, but the Main House and Studio Theatre did not change. The changes included:
- Large first floor multi-function rehearsal, workshop and performance space
- New accessible entrance
- A new retail space incorporating a revamped Box Office
- Café Bar expansion and refurbishment
- Outdoor terrace on the first floor, alongside an extended Mezzanine

The work began in April 2020 and was completed in October 2020.
Will you still have events on when the work is happening?
Yes, don’t worry! We will still have performances as normal. We aren’t doing any work to our Main House or Studio so these spaces will not be affected, and work will not be happening in the evenings. There may be some changes to our Cinema schedule during the day, but we will endeavour to screen as many films as possible.
Will I still be able to eat & drink in The Courtyard Café Bar?
The Café Bar will remain in operation throughout the development works, it will just look a little different. We have plenty of space throughout the building where we’re going to relocate our tables and seating areas, you might just get a new view whilst eating your food! Book your table online here.
Our aim is to keep the Café Bar operating business as usual during these works, however there could be short periods of time where there is disruption, for example when electrical and/or plumbing works take place so do check online or with our Box Office team if you are planning on dining with us before or after the event.
Where will Youth Theatre and other groups/workshops be?
All sessions will carry on as normal, as our workshop rooms will not be affected.
Where can I buy tickets?
Tickets are available to book as usual on the phone, online and in person at our Box Office. Box Office will be moved slightly in to our foyer space. It will be clearly visible and sign posted.
