Maestro Season

Enjoy our specially curated Maestro Season

This June we’re exploring the life and career of iconic composer Ennio Morricone with our Maestro Season. The Italian composer’s music has spanned decades including some of the most iconic ever put to film. You can book for all 4 films for just £20! We’ll be starting our season with Ennio, a brand new documentary chronicling the life of Morricone. The feature includes testimony from industry legends Hanz Zimmer, Quentin Tarantino and many more.

Then we’re dropping back to the 60s with a classic Western. Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) is our selection as Clint Eastwood stars as the wandering gun fighter who plays two rival families against one another. We even have a screening projected from a 35mm print in our new Film on Film strand supported by the BFI.

Moving to the 1980s we have The Mission (1986) as we see Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons play Spanish Jesuits attempting to protect a South American tribe from falling into the pro-slavery rule of Portugal. A drastic shift from his Western work, Morricone went on to receive an Oscar nomination for the Roland Joffe feature.

Finally, we close out the season with Cinema Paradiso (1988) the tale of a filmmaker reminiscing his love for film and his local cinema in Italy. This nostalgic exploration of childhood was a surprise hit across the world, becoming a staple for independent cinemas. Plus, we couldn’t ignore this masterful score to remind us all why we first fell in love with cinema.
