What is volunteer stewarding?

Volunteer stewards’ primary duties are to ensure the comfort, health and safety of our audiences. Working with the Front of House team, stewards are briefed before every event on show information and evacuation procedures. Stewards check tickets, assist with ice cream and merchandise sales during intervals and help with any questions asked by members of the public.

As a licensed performance and entertainment venue, we are obliged to have stewards present at events to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public. This is critical in the event of an unexpected or emergency situation. In the unlikely event of a power failure or a fire, we need to ensure that the audience can leave the venue safely and as such, evacuation training is mandatory in order to be a steward, once a year.

The Courtyard Trust is funded through a combination of grants, funding and donations. We are an entirely non-profit organisation and cannot afford to employ stewards on a paid basis.
Volunteer Stewards have meaningful impact and dramatically enhance the experience of our visitors by providing excellent customer service and making The Courtyard welcoming and accessible for all.
