Two | New Youth Theatre Experiences

(First) Time for “Two”

Having joined Senior Youth Theatre at the end of 2017, this has been my first experience of working towards a production to be performed at The Courtyard. The rehearsal process has differed from my previous experiences, mainly due to solely focusing on my role as an actor rather than all members of the group taking on the role of a co-director as well. This has resulted in excellent casting choices, thus optimising and taking full advantage of the skills and strengths presented by each individual member of the group, whilst also pushing us to step out of our comfort zones and do things we might not have done before. Furthermore, it has allowed greater time to be spent on developing and strengthening a sense of character, both physically and mentally, all of which – along with the particular attention drawn to including more physical and externally visual aspects of acting within the production – has really brought to life and given depth to each character and the snapshot provided of their personal lives and stories. This helps to create the illusion of the stage as a window into the eyes of a wide range of ordinary people and what something as precious and intangible as love really means to them.

This production is a unique adaptation of one of Jim Cartwright’s highly appraised works, with an inherently beautiful intimacy and a timeless appeal to all corners of society as the play weaves through individual stories and connects both the characters and the audience with the very essence of what it means to be human – to experience the vulnerable strength of love.
